Learning to Take Action
Welcome to the Stepping uP Against Racism and Xenophobia (SPARX) Curriculum
Are you an adult who wants to build their capacities to recognize and disrupt racism and xenophobia? And do you want to support young people to do the same? SPARX meets you where you are and provides a better understanding of racism and xenophobia by looking at these issues from personal, historical, structural, and systemic perspectives. We believe that everyone can work towards antiracism and that it’s a lifelong journey.
Each module follows a key guiding principle and builds on the previous one for optimal learning and growth.
SPARX is built on 7 guiding principles.

The identities we hold and the privileges we possess influence the way that we move in the world.
We will be uncomfortable at times as we consider perspectives and experiences that are different from our own as well as various forms of harm we may have perpetuated directly or indirectly. Identifying when and why our discomfort arises helps us to move through it constructively.
Recognizing the full humanity of other people involves seeking to understand the diverse perspectives and experiences they may have, which may be similar to or different from our own.
A life-long commitment to continuous learning supports our growth in future knowledge and actions, and past ignorance does not prevent future growth.
Recognizing intersectional oppressions involves awareness of how racism is ingrained in various institutions and systems.
Recognizing intersectional oppressions involves awareness of how individuals, including ourselves, may benefit from and challenge unjust systems.
Although we may not have created unjust systems, we have a responsibility to disrupt such systems of oppression through action.
